First time User Guide

    What is the ASL?

The ASL, or Analytical Services Laboratory, is a facility that contains a variety of analytical instruments for students to use for academic research purposes. It is located on the ground floor of Tech, room KG73

    Who can use the ASL?

The ASL can be used by any graduate student or professor provided that they have received proper training and they have an ASL account.

What sort of equipment is available in the ASL?

An instrument list can be found here.

An instrument is down, what do I do?

Stop signs are locatated near the login computer or can be downloaded here. Contact the appropriate staff member and fill out the sign so that other users do not have to encounter the same problem you found.

I need to use an instrument in the ASL, what do I need to do?

    Read the ASL Guidelines Document.

Fill out an ASL account application [PDF] form. This form needs to be taken to the business office of your department and approved. The form then needs to be given to a member of the ASL staff who will then create your account. It may be useful to get a Calcium account as well. Some instruments (especially the MS) require advanced reservations on Calcium.

Contact the ASL staff member who is responsible for your intrument to arrange a training session.

Check the list of instrument guides to see if there is any reference material on your instrument. If there is, look it over and print up a copy to bring to your training session.

After your training session is complete, you will be allowed to log onto and use the instrument you trained on.

How do I log onto an instrument?

When you receive training for an instrument, your trainer will demonstrate how to logon. Type your password on the login computer, select Logon and select the instrument you want to use. Select exit this menu and you should see your user name next to the instrument. Careful, before logging in, make sure no one else is already on your instrument and make sure the instrument is not unavailable for service.

Remember to logoff the instrument in the same way when you are done using it. You will see a summary of the time and the bill for your instrument use.

If there is ever a software problem and you are unable to log on, please use the instrument without logging in and keep notes in the log book about your start and end time.

How much does it cost to use the equipment?
